Do You love Jesus?
Today scripture text is taken from John 21:14-17 where the Lord (following His resurrection) appeared and spoke to Simon Peter. In this conversation between them, Jesus asked Peter 3 times “Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me?”
Apparently the Lord wanted to know how much Peter really loved Him! The test is to understand these 2 Greek words “Agape” and “Phileo”.
Agape is described as selfless, sacrificial, unconditional love, the highest of 4 types of love used in the Bible.
Phileo means to like or fond of a friend, liking and object or thing.
Judas was bad, worse than “Phileo”, he betrayed Jesus. But Peter was tested severely by the Lord. He denied The Lord 3 times after he earlier said he would follow him and would even die for Him!
Let’s read John 21 to see how he was tested and this was after the Lord’s Resurrection!
15 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.”
Peter here used the word “phileo”.
“16 He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.”
The 2nd time he again answered “Phileo”
“17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.”
Now Jesus asked again “you Phileo me?
How sad, Peter could not agape Him. And so he denied the Lord even after the resurrection!
But thank God that Peter grew as he served The Lord!
In Ephesians 1:18-19 he finally agape Jesus? He was the only one who called His blood “Precious” !
Amen & amen
We can all grow as we tarry and serve and hopefully one day we can tell Him “Lord I agape thee”
